HISTORY OF BLINMAN
The township of Blinman was surveyed in 1864 following the discovery of copper in 1859 by a shepherd, Robert 'Pegleg' Blinman. However, it was too far from the mines so in 1867 the township of Blinman North was established. At the height of the mining industry the population numbered 1,500 to 2,000 with houses extending from Blinman South to Blinman North. The Blinman Mine eventually closed in 1918 after producing 10,000 tonnes of copper but opened again in 2011 as a tourist destination with underground mine tours. Blinman's population now numbers less than 25.
